What Is the Catechism?

The Church's Great Summary

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) is the Church's authoritative summary of Catholic doctrine — what she believes, celebrates, lives, and prays. Commissioned by the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops in 1985 and promulgated by Pope John Paul II in 1992 (second edition 1997), it represents the fruit of the Second Vatican Council expressed in the full continuity of Tradition.

The CCC is not a list of rules. It is an organic presentation — meaning its parts are alive and interconnected, each illuminating the others. At its center stands Jesus Christ, from whom every doctrine receives its meaning. The Prologue opens with paragraph 1: "God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life." Everything that follows is the unpacking of that single sentence.

The text of the CCC is freely available on the Vatican's website. Every paragraph number on this page links directly to the Vatican text. This page serves as a guide and companion — introducing the four pillars and providing a searchable index of the most commonly asked topics.

How to Use the CCC

1
By Paragraph Number

Every statement in the CCC is numbered. References are written "CCC 1234" meaning paragraph 1234. Paragraph numbers are the primary navigation tool.

2
By Pillar

Know which of the four parts covers your question: Creed (26–1065), Sacraments (1066–1690), Morality (1691–2557), Prayer (2558–2865).

3
By Topic

Use the search index below. Type any topic to find relevant paragraph numbers with summaries and direct Vatican links.

4
"In Brief" Sections

Each major article ends with an "In Brief" summary. These are ideal starting points before reading the full treatment of a topic.

The Four Pillars

Structure of the Catechism

The CCC is organized around the four pillars that have structured catechesis since the early Church — the same four pillars taught to catechumens before Baptism across the centuries.
